Three Years Later

Today, after an English lesson in the morning, I met up with a bunch of friends (mainly HIA Fellows) to stroll around the Karneval der Kulturen (Carnival of Cultures) in Kreuzberg. It's a huge weekend festival, and there's plenty of good food and drinks.

Since I was already in the neighborhood for my English class, I ended up going and walking around with my students. It was a lot of fun, and since I used to live around the corner from the main starting point, it wasn't hard to find my way around.

After an hour or so, my friend, Oscar, and his girlfriend, Carolina, arrived and met up with us. Oscar was one of the HIA Fellows from my year, and we were research partners then. So it was great to see him again after three years. We walked around some more and then decided to head back to my place, where we would be spending the rest of the day grilling and just chilling.

Last night, I had marinated some chicken wings and stocked up with sausages and other meats in my fridge. Apparently, it wasn't enough as we ate it all up pretty quickly. But not before Oscar and I struggled somewhat to get the grill going.

Nevertheless, we were able to get it warm soon and heated up some meats. After not having eaten much all day, this was heavenly, and the sky looked gorgeous.

Anton wasn't due to arrive back in Berlin for another hour or so, but he finally made it later in the evening. After his arrival, he helped us fire up the grill big time and get it smoldering hot. Clearly, Oscar and I are pretty rusty at that...

He had also brought some ribs, which were absolutely delicious. Oh man, we ate like kings. Since we hung out on the terrace, I forgot all about some bread I'd stuck in the oven...they didn't turn out well.

All in all though, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset, great food, and the fun catching up of international friendships.

We took a few pictures of us in the same style as we did three years ago. I definitely looked young then...not that I look much older now. You can tell which ones are from which years. :)

I'm so glad Oscar and Carolina took the time to visit us in Berlin, and I'm bummed that I have to head to Marburg tomorrow. Otherwise, I'd totally spend tomorrow with them too. It's a busy week for me as I've got lots of travel and work mixed together. More as it comes.

Till then,

Sam
