A Bit of Seattle in Berlin

Today, I woke up early again to go pick up my friend, Joan, from the airport. Since Joan and I traveled together to Munich back in 2007 on my very first trip to Germany, it was good to see her back in Berlin again.

After our ride home and after picking up a few fresh rolls, we had a nice breakfast with Ariel at home. Then we headed out to explore some Berlin sites we hadn't really visited before. Sadly, this week's weather has been a bit wetter than last week's. Must be the rain from Seattle. :)

We took two trams to get to the Stasi Museum though, and for the 4€ we each paid, I'm not sure it was terribly worth it. But it was neat to see nonetheless. Germany's GDR history is something I never really paid attention to until my later visits to Berlin.

After the museum, we were going to head to Mauerpark (a Berlin Wall park), but it was too cold, wet, and windy out. So instead we headed to Alexanderplatz for some snacks and coffee (at Starbucks!).

It was already in the afternoon, so we took a tram to Schönhauser Allee and went grocery shopping at the Asian store (food for Thursday night...we're making lumpia, Thai sweet chili chicken, and a napa cabbage veggie dish). We then went to the Netto grocery store, but only after having gone into Kaiser's first because we couldn't find Netto. Netto is way cheaper than Kaiser's, so that's why we ended up going to two grocery stores.

Once we got home, we made butter chicken curry with bamboo shoots. Yum! Also, I felt like a kid opening up a box of cereal for the hidden toy because the curry packet had a "chopstick rest" inside. It's a tiny fish plate. Pretty awesome! :)

For dessert, we had some red bean mochi, which was delicious.

We also did some prep work for the lumpia, which includes chopping lots of veggies and then stir-frying them briefly. Looks good already!

Tomorrow morning, Ariel and I will be visiting one of my schools to talk with the 9th grade English class. Looking forward to chatting with them. Joan is heading to Cottbus to visit a prospective grad school. Then in the evening, we'll have a nice dinner at my house before heading out into the Berlin night life to celebrate St. Patty's Day. We will certainly hit up an Irish pub.

Until next time,

Sam
