It's been a busy few days since my friends from Seattle arrived. Yesterday, Joan went to check out a potential grad school, so Ariel and I headed to a few museums. We visited the New National Gallery, which housed some works by a few great modern artists. Here's one by Edvard Munch.
After the museum, we headed to the Märkisches Museum, which I have only ever passed but not gone into. It was pretty neat. I was impressed by the content they have there. The theme is "Here is Berlin" so they have exhibits on various phases of Berlin history. They highlight a number of popular/famous places and show their evolution over the years.
One cool thing I liked was this strange photo viewer. You sit at a chair and peek through two lens, which allow you to see the photos in 3D. Every few seconds the machine would change to the next picture. I saw a lot of pictures from the 1800 and 1900s of places in Berlin that I know very well like my university, museum island, and the area around the Brandenburg Gate. Pretty neat. That in itself was worth the 3€ admission price.
We headed over to Ritter Sport after that, but not before we stopped by a chocolate store by Gendarmenmarkt. Check out these masterpieces.
After Ritter Sport, we hit up H&M to find me a new coat, but the material seemed bad. I decided I'll wait till later this spring. We headed to Dussman's, which is a major bookstore by Friedrichstraße, before heading home for the afternoon.
At home, we met up with Joan, who had returned from her grad school visit. We planned to make lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) and Thai Sweet Chili Chicken as our main dishes for dinner. Brandon and his friend, Stefan, came over too. We had a great feast for St. Patrick's Day!
We also had some Berliner Pilsner, which Ariel and I lugged four or five blocks home from the grocery store. My arms still hurt from that...Brandon cooked broccoli with some oyster sauce, and we ate everything with some fresh rice. Boy, we were stuffed.
During our dinner prep, I had my laptop on to watch some NCAA games. So far, my bracket's looking pretty good. A few Fulbrighters and I put a pool together, and I think I have a good shot at winning it all. We shall see.
After some Wii games after dinner, we headed out to an Irish Pub. There were tons of other folks out there too, so it took us 40 minutes just to order our Guinness. But it was well worth it. Fun to celebrate St. Patty's Day with some Irish beer.
We then headed back to Prenzlauer Berg to hit up the absinthe bar. Brandon hadn't been to the place before, so it was fun to go there again. It was a fun night for sure.
This morning, Ariel, Joan, and I headed out to check out a museum in Nikolai Quarter. It was free to get in, but it was slightly underwhelming. Much like the Goethe Haus in Frankfurt. Just an old house. But at least it was free. :)
We then stopped by a deli near Hackescher Markt. Before then, we stopped by Hackescher Höfe to take a quick picture.
Lunch at the deli was pretty good. Apparently, the lady who started it is from Seattle. It was nice to eat a bagel. Hadn't had one in many months.
This afternoon, our friend, Galane, arrived from Rome, and we went to pick her up at Schönefeld Airport. It's quite far away, but it was fun to ride together. I must say I fell asleep for most of the ride there.
On our way back, we picked up some more food, and tonight we made more lumpia and had the white wine sauce pasta that Brandon taught me. We had yet another feast.
Tomorrow, we will be hitting up a number of museums. I have to head over to Brandon's briefly in the afternoon to get my monthly haircut. We have our Fulbright Conference starting on Sunday, so I need to not have long hair (by my standards). Then it'll be an afternoon and evening of good food and drinks.
I have a number of projects I still need to finish in the next week, so as the Germans would say, "ich muss noch Gas geben."
Till next time,
Sam
