Heaven in Hydra

After another day of double interviews yesterday, I was ready for a break. I'm enjoying our research interviews, but we had another tough day gathering interviews. So it's nice to have a physical and mental break from working hard.

Last night was encouraging as we were able to interview some younger guys in Exarhia, the neighborhood where a number of riots took place last December. If I haven't explained already, that's the basis of why we're in Greece--to learn about the riots from the voices of people who lived and experienced them.

Anyway, this morning, we woke up early to catch a ferry to the island of Hydra. From what I'd learned from the newspaper and Rick Steves, Hydra is a small island where no cars are allowed. You can't find them at all--people use donkeys for transportation.

When we arrived, I felt like I was in heaven, and I went a bit camera crazy again. Check it out!

I spent the afternoon with Taso and Maggie, and Taso brought us to a small beach with amazingly turquoise water. Maggie and I went swimming, and in the first minute, I must've swallowed two gulps of ultra-salty water. It's so salty...it burns when it goes up your nose!

We then stopped for a beer and headed to another spot along the coast, where I just soaked in the sun (don't worry, I sprayed myself with plenty of sunscreen). I am definitely a lot darker now. : )

Hydra's harbor is quite picturesque, and I wanted to take a panoramic picture of it. I still need to stitch it together, but here are some basic shots...

The rest of the day was pretty chill as we had a group dinner on the balcony of a local tavern. It was delicious! After that, we headed back and did some reading for tomorrow. Then Maggie and I headed down to the harbor to meet up with Taso to watch the Olympiakos soccer game. It was pretty exciting! They won 1-0.

Tomorrow, we have the whole day to relax in Hydra, so I'm planning on hitting up a few more beaches with Maggie. Should be fun.

More later,

Sam
