It's been a while since the last update, so here are a whole bunch of photos from the past week.
After going to Malaysia on Monday, we went over to our uncle's for dinner. Good stuff.
May seemed to enjoy the giant massage chair in the living room.
After dinner, we went to an arcade with the cousins. It was very entertaining playing on one arcade game with all my cousins.
We went karaokeing after the arcade. I don't know how many cousins you have, but we only had half of us in this picture.
The next morning, one of our cousins took us to her campus, the new Yale-NUS campus in Singapore. They're still constructing new buildings, so some of the buildings are shared now with NUS.
The campus was pretty large! I was quite impressed. The girls went to lunch, and I headed to Orchard Road (the touristy strip in Singapore) with my friends, Jess and Fredrik, who just got married in Bali. Over the past few years, we've met up in Seattle, Norway, New York City, Bali, and now Singapore.
Since I had taken them to Shanghai Café in NYC, we decided to go to Ding Tai Fung for soup dumplings. First, though, we had to get some world-famous cronuts (a donut made with croissant dough).
After waiting in line for Ding Tai Fung for about 30 minutes, we got a nice table and went to town. Delicious!
We were so full, so we had to skip the long line of people waiting for ice cream in a slice of white bread. I'd only ever heard stories of this stuff, so this was pretty cool to see.
I had scheduled the afternoon to hang out with my grandma, so I had to say goodbye to Jess and Fredrik. Love these two!
At our grandparents' houses, my sister May and I have found many old photos — photos of our grandparents as young, strapping couples as well as photos of our parents as children. Of course, there were pictures of us as kids, too. So, we snapped up photos of a ton. Here are a few gems.
And me...when I was a baby who drooled all the time.
That night, we went to dinner with our grandma and one of our aunts. We had stingray, and it was so good!
I have been eating so much food! I must exercise a lot when I get home. The next morning, two of our aunts took us to lunch at a hawker center. So good!
Then we went to hang out with the grandparents and cousins.
In the afternoon, they took us to get haircuts (it took sooo long we felt awful for our grandparents and aunts who waited for us).
Then we went to Marina Bay to walk around and take pictures of the Merlion. It was actually quite a bit smaller than I'd always imagined it.
We also went into the Fullerton Hotel, which is amazingly posh. Just stunning. I would only stay in a hotel like this if it were paid for by someone else. Haha.
The area around the hotel along the Singapore River is also pretty neat. We arrived at a good time for some nice shots at dusk.
After all that walking around, we decided to go to a food court. More food at amazingly cheap prices.
On Thursday morning, it was a public holiday, so most folks got the day off. I have a handful of friends in Singapore, so I met up with one for breakfast at 8 AM. In Singapore, it is totally okay to eat any food at any time, it seems. So we had some noodles. I waited 25 minutes for this stuff.
Deborah and I went to high school together for a bit along with my older sister. Shocking that we hadn't seen each other in nearly ten years.
The rest of the day was more fun adventures with aunts, uncle, grandpa, and cousins (oh, and sister). After meeting up back at their house, we headed to Sentosa to visit the Underwater World.
There was this guy with two pythons putting them on people with the goal of getting them to pay for a picture. He put one of the pythons on me (it weighed more than 5 kilos, which is almost 11 pounds) and asked if I wanted a picture. I said no, so he took the python away and put it on some poor kid whose dad was having far more fun than her mom with this whole python business.
Underwater World was an awesome aquarium with lots of hands-on exhibits and cool-looking water creatures.
The top feature I thought was the moving belt through the tunnel under the giant fish and shark tank. I decided I want one in my future house.
We also got to catch a neat show with dolphins and furry seals. Amazing. I sat front row with my grandpa.
There were a ton of peacocks just strutting around, too. Pretty interesting. They do not seem to be afraid of people anymore. They came right up to us as we were eating.
After Underwater World, we stopped by a beach real fast, so I could see it. A few quick photos and then back in the car.
Great way to spend the first day of this long national holiday weekend. On Friday, Singapore's National Day (celebrating independence from the Malaysia), we went shopping during the day with our grandma, two aunts, and two cousins and had a feast of a lunch. My goodness.
Walking around the mall after lunch, I found this döner kebab shop. Expensive!
My aunts insisted on buying me a shirt or two, so I tried this one and then my cousin found me matching shorts. No, I did not buy both (just the shirt).
We headed to our aunt's house where there is a swimming pool and went to hang out at the pool with all the cousins. I still have not gone swimming since Bali, so I sat out this time, too. But I took tons of pictures, while the cousins played with my underwater camera in the pool. (Also, have you ever seen anyone wear full-on snorkeling gear in a swimming pool? I hadn't until Friday.)
We had so much food to eat, and some of my cousins were so nice to fill up my plate for me. I didn't even have to move to get food! Haha. :P
After dinner, we went downstairs to play with some sparklers, and we took some pictures while making so much noise that we got some complaints. Complaints mean we had a great time! Haha.
We eventually moved inside for games.
Two of our aunts were kind enough to drive May and me home, even though we had said we'd take a taxi. We've been absolutely showered with love from our entire family.
This morning, we met up early with one aunt for breakfast. It's crazy how much good food there is all around. Very easy to gain weight! Then we went home to play with cousins and hang out with grandparents.
After lunch, we headed to Mount Faber, which is one of the higher natural points in Singapore. It was really pretty from above. Quite warm though.
Nice view, no?
Yeah, that's the restroom.
We rode the cable car over to Sentosa, which was really cool.
May had fun walking around with the little one.
The whole park is really cool. Lots to see.
We got hungry, so we went to McDonald's. I was totally okay with it, because I like to try McDonald's in local places. They sometimes have special items that you don't find in the US. I've found this to be true in Greece, Germany, and maybe Italy. Look at this line, though!
After that filling dinner (no, really, I was stuffed), we walked back and took more pictures. Stunning, really.
And to close this very long post, here's a beauty of a picture. Nice note left on the elevator door.
Till the next post!
