I had a school visit this morning. Same school as on Wednesday. Interviewed a few students, a hockey player and a tennis player. Both smart kids and certainly articulate. And both interviews in German. I think it'll turn out better this way, since they were able to talk more. I did give them the choice though, and their default choice is normally German. Perfect.
I ended up getting home earlier than expected because my tutoring appointment got canceled 'cause the student got sick. Then my dinner and tour plans for Kreuzberg this evening were also canceled as my friend texted me to say she's also sick. So thankfully I had more time this afternoon to just work.
Around 5 pm though, Lenz came home and told me he was about to go to Monbijou Park (a small park across from Museum Island and actually down the street from the Fulbright Commission) to grill with about 30-40 of his friends. Since my evening was now free, he invited me along as he has on several other occasions. I haven't ever been able to go since I had been busy, but I figured tonight, "Why not?" It's Friday anyway, and honestly, I was in a mood to just hang out, have some beer, and enjoy some good company.
So off to Monbijou Park we went with our bag of meat, his volleyball, and a blanket. Me and a whole crowd of Germans. Wonderful. Haha. As Lenz said, it was a good opportunity to practice my German. Love it. The food was also good, and it was just nice to be in the sun. The weather today was absolutely perfect, and I hear this weekend will be more of the same.
It was great to just chill with Lenz too. Honestly, we've both been traveling so much over the past few months that we've never really had more than two weeks in a row when we're both at home. Haha.
After a while, we heated up some sausages and bread. Plus Lenz had brought some potato salad. Yum.
I actually called Brandon too to invite him over, since he was at the Fulbright Alumni Conference. I had the chance to go to the conference too, but honestly, I was not in the mood to pay 50€ for a weekend of meetings that I really didn't feel like being at. They did get to go to the U.S. Embassy today, but then again, I just had another meeting there last week. Haha.
After a few beers, I had to go to the bathroom, so I walked around the park to the WC. On my way, I saw the Spree River, and of course, the Bode Museum just across on Museum Island. Looked nice. Lots of people chilling at the restaurant on the waterfront. Ah, so nice to see the weather become nice after a frosty and downright freezing winter.
After our food, we decided to play a German game called Flankyball, which is just a game involving beer. I skipped the first round to just watch the German kids go at it, but joined in rather reluctantly for the second round. Pretty amusing.
Anyway, tomorrow, I'm meeting with an old HIA colleague of mine from the U.S. He's flying in from New York, and we're grabbing brunch together. Haven't seen him in person since 2008, so it should be fun. Then in the afternoon, I'm meeting up with my friend, Rob, who is from Wisconsin but has lived in Berlin for the past 10 years, to grill with him and his four-year-old son in Mauerpark. Should be fun!
Have a good weekend,
Sam
